Igor Basin alias BIGor is an indefatigable
activist and annalist of Slovenian punk. Born in 1969, he was too
young to be part of the early Slovenian punk movement in the late
seventies. But in 1984, after watching a concert of the Canadian band
D.O.A. he converted to punk and became a committed activist.
It all started when BiGor first became an active member at the CRMK,
a youth club in his home town. He worked as a DJ, bartender and concert
organizer.
At the CRMK he met many Yugoslavian post punk bands, but also foreign
bands like The Ex, Membranes, Disorder, Eugene
Chadbourne and Fred Frith. Today through his job as a culture
editor at Radio Student Ljubljana and of various fanzines and
magazines, he is constantly following and documenting the Slovenian
punk scene.
At the Punk! Kongress BIGor will talk about the vital and creative
punk scene in Former Yugoslavia and show some rare and unknown video
material.
In 1989 BIGor started to study Sociology in Ljubljana, the capital
of Slovenia. He soon worked for Europe Radio Student, Slovenias
first independent radio station, founded in 1969. BIGor also wrote
at that time for well known Yugoslavian fanzine called D'Iks,
later renamed into Rock Vibe. Between 1993 and 1995 BIGor was
music journalist at Radio Student. Under the pseudonym Garbageman
he hosted a show called Garbage Rock on Radio Student and organized
concerts. Furthermore he worked as program manager and DJ in Ljubljanas
underground rock club B-51.
From 1995 until 2002 BIGor organized concerts for bands like The Jon
Spencer Blues Explosion; Rocket From The Crypt; Delta 72; Killdozer;
Kepone; Sleater-Kinney; 20 Miles and Mule. At the end of the nineties
he started Garbage Productions, Production Company and a record
label. He produced several Slovenian bands and released singles and
CDs. In 1997 BIGor founded the band Stirje Pravi Dedci.
Because of his interest in bands, music, local movements and the history
of punk rock, BIGor was a born music journalist. So he began to work
as a cultural editor for the music magazine Muska. In 2000
BIGor finished his studies and wrote a paper about the legendary Novi
Rock Festival. The festival is a platform for new Yugoslavian
rock bands since 1981. In 2000 he also produced the TV music show
Saturday Night, a two hour broadcast on Slovenian Television.
Today BIGor is still working for Radio Student, he is hosting a Late-Night-Show
for the nationwide radio and is co-editor of Muska.
