With the concept "little but real
Rock & Roll" Marlene Marder, Klaudia Schifferle,
Lislot Ha and Regula Sing formed the band Kleenex (later
LiLiPUT) in May 1978. The band existed for five years. And as one
of the first female punk band they are praised by international critics
until today.
In contrast to the more politically motivated Swiss punk scene, the
girls from Kleenex just wanted to have fun and enjoy themselves. The
repertoire of the Kleenex band held only four songs, but with their
self-confidence they soon became a hot tip in the musical scene of
Switzerland. They are notorious for their aggressive and un-lady-like
sound and their dadaesque lyrics.
Marlene Marder, who used to play guitar and write songs for the band,
is one of the few women at the Punk! Kongress to talk about punk from
a female perspective.
Marlene Marder used to be the saxophonist of the Nasal Boys,
and later in 1978 set up the band Kleenex with Klaudia Schifferle
(bass), Lislot Ha (drums) and Regula Sing (vocals).
In the early days of Swiss punk the scene is small scene and everyone
knew each other. Neither the publicity and nor the record companies
are interested in the punk phenomena. So Kleenex puts out their first
EP with their four songs Beri-Beri, Ain't You, Hedi's
Hed and Nice on Sunrise on an independent label founded
by friends of the band. A few copies of the EP end up in England where
it came to the attention of John Peel and Rough Trade Records.
The English audience, already used to punk, so Kleenex made it directly
into the charts. One year after their founding and with a new record
deal in their pocket the band tours Europe with Scritti Politti
and Red Krayola. The releases of 1978 and 1983 Liliput and
Some Songs caught a lot of international interest. Rock critics like
Robert Christau and Greil Marcus where impressed by
the insolence of the sassy "fair-haired Maidens of Switzerland",
who would mix Dada and rock and roll and don't give a shit about what
other people might think of them.
By the end of 1979 Kleenex changes their name into Liliput,
because the Kimperly-Clark Corporation, owner of the brand
name "Kleenex", is putting pressure on them. In 1983 the
band splits after a frequent fluctuation of the line up. The remaining
members of the original band where guitarist Marlene Marder and bass
player Klaudia Schifferle.
In the beginning of the nineties Marlene Marder releases another Album
called LilPUT a compilation containing old recordings of the
band that she found on tapes and that where never published. And in
2001 almost twenty years after the break of the band Kill Rock
Stars republished this retrospective album on their label.
After Kleenex Marlene Marders life went through a lot of changes.
In the eighties she owned a record store, worked as a promoter, managed
a jazz club and played in a band called Danger Mice. In the nineties
she was involved in the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). In 1985
she published a book called Das Tagebuch der Gitarristin Marlene
Marder, Kleenex/Liliput. Since May 2004 she is running a maritime
shop in Switzerland and Die
Matrosen are on board.
