Born in 1957 in East Berlin, Ronald
Galenza was intimately connected with the alternative music scene
of the former GDR. He is still living in his old Berlin neighborhood
and has described his experience and the punk scene in the GDR
in various articles and radio- broadcasts. He published the book Wir
wollen immer artig sein Punk, New Wave, Hip Hop, Independent-Szene
in der DDR 1980-1990 and Mix mir einen Drink Feeling
B Punk im Osten.
At the Punk! Kongress Ronald Galenza will talk about living in the
GDR in the eighties and about punk as a subversive art.
Ronald Galenza biography is characteristic and represents the life
of many young people in the former GDR. After high school and the
obligatory military service he studied journalism. He spend many years
doing jobs like squeezing fruit, delivering mail and assisting the
minister in church.
In the beginning of the eighties Ronald Galenza was arrested twice
at concerts that where staged by the FDJ, the official youth
organization of the GDR. "Conspicuous behavior" was reason
enough for the authorities to turn him in, so he had to spend a night
in prison each time he was arrested. He became a punk because of his
anger and frustration with a society that criminalized a youth movement.
"In the West punk soon became a musical genre like many others,
but in the GDR the movement grew more radical and political. In the
very beginning the kids only wanted to show their objection against
their environment, later they got more and more political, radical
and criminal, because they where living under a government, that employed
its entire police apparatus to monitor and solve the problem "punk".
(Ronald Galenza)
After 1986 Ronald Galenza works for DT 64 (radio station for young
people in the GDR) and tries to create a format for alternative music-
broadcasting. In 1990 he starts do do his first shows. Today he is
working as a cultural editor for Radio Fritz (RBB) and when
he is not playing boule or table ice hockey, he is djaying under the
name of DJ Electric Galenza.
Besides that Galenza was co-founder of the first independent discotheque
X-Mal in East Berlin and organized legendary musical events.
He was a member of the rock- advisory board for the Berlin cultural
Senate, wrote various rock lyrics (Pankow) and liner notes for other
bands.
