The Kids are Belgiums most important contribution to
the history of punk rock. The Kids were formed in 1976 in Antwerp
by Ludo Mariman (guitar and voc), his little brother Danny
(bass) and Eddie de Haes (drums). Ludo und Eddie felt that
they couldnt continue living as dock workers after seeing Eddie
& The Hot Rods and the Ramones playing in London.
After the Sex Pistols made it to the top spot in the Britisch charts,
The Kids got their chance: because of their exciting live acts they
got a record deal with Phonogram. Their debut album,
The Kids, was produced by expert Leo Caerts , the author of
the world hit "Eviva España". Despite his background,
he managed to keep the rough sound of Kids alive. The record came
out in 1978 and explosive titles like No Monarchy,
Do You Love the Nazis, Bloody Belgium
and This is Rock & Roll were the songs that
got them started.
Today. The Kids are considered as one of the most important punk bands
on the European continent. Their music was always authentic and genuine.
Thats what The Kids are going to prove at Punk! Kongress.
Danny, Ludos little Brother was only 14 when The Kids toured
in Belgium back in the days. So they always had a fear of getting
in trouble with the police. Strangely enough, nothing has ever happened.
When they recorded their second album Naughty Kids
a new guitar player, Luc van de Poel joined them. The band
changed its stile from Sex Pistols to New Wave, but without
loosing tempo. The Song Razorblades for Sale was
Ludos critical respond to the growing commercialization of punk.
In 1979 the drummer Eddie de Haes had left the band and was replaced
by Cesar Janssens. With their third album which came out in
the following year, Living in the 20th Century,
they managed to combine some elements of pop with punk energy: pieces
like Dance the Night Away, Im Your
Mirror or Tonight are very upbeat. That
sound was perfectionated on the album Black-Out from 1981:
With their 7inch release Dance The Kids made it
to the Top Ten of the Belgian charts.
The Kids performed at their best when they where playing in front
of an audience. So they recorded one of their concerts with a mobile
recording studio from the Rolling Stones. In 1982 they released their
live material on an album called If the Kids
.
In the following year another single Mercy Mercy
came out. It was their last track on a Major-Label. This time it was
Mercury Records. After a two years break, in 1985, The Kids
released a new album Gotcha! on the independent-label
Konexion. For Ludo and Danny it was the last recording with The Kids:
Ludo started a solo carrier and Danny quit being a musician.
In 1991 it was the Release of their "Best of CD": the compilation
"1976 - 1986" with material from their Phonogram und Mercury
recordings. In 1996 they reformed after their 20 year jubilee
for a Reunion-Tour with the original line-up. Today The Kids
are playing frequently in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy.
The De Haes brothers where replaced by Freddie Saenen on the
drums and Pieter van Buyten on the bass. In 2001 their second
live album came out for their 25th anniversary.
